The 5-Petal Flower Granny Square
This granny square is my proudest design yet. It’s incorporated in my logo and in countless freehand projects, but I must confess, I’ve been gatekeeping the pattern. I was so proud of the math it took to develop this design, I felt like I had to protect it with my life. You can often find 8 or 12 petal grannies because those are easily divided into 4 sides, but a 5 petal granny eluded me for many years until 2021.
But without further ado, here it is! Free to incorporate in all of your blankets, cardigans, tote bags—whatever projects you can imagine! I personally love this square in a patchwork cardigan I made 2 years ago, a pair of shorts I wore to Coachella in 2023, and last but not least, the 6 Day Halter Top (!), which is a collab between me and Betty McKnit of the 6-Day Star Blanket.
Like a traditional granny square, this design leaves a little breathing room in the form of chain spaces for a more airy feel. Feel free to adapt rounds 6 onward to whatever end pattern or shape you are looking for. Once you see how the math works out, you’ll get why this pattern is a little bit addicting.
