The Alchemy Socks are cosy with a delicate pattern making them perfect for the transitional seasons. The pattern includes ankle length socks and trainer socks. Suitable for a confident beginner who can knit in the round - I have written and picture instructions for most techniques, but you may find watching a video useful if you have never worked the techniques before.

The socks are knitted from the cuff to the toes in the round. I use small circular needles, but you can use the magic loop method or DPNs based on your preference.

Techniques used: knitting in the round, decreasing using k2tog and SSK, increasing using YO, picking up stitches, kitchener stitch (instructions included in pattern)

Materials needed:

  • 3.5mm needles (circular or DPN based on preference). If using short circulars, then you will need to use the magic loop method on larger circulars or switch to DPNs for the last few rows when the toe becomes too narrow.
  • Darning needle to weave in ends
  • Stitch marker (x3), but not neccesary

Yarn:

  • Main colour yarn - any DK yarn. I have used Valley Yarn -Superwash DK (125m/50g) in colour natural.
  • Contrast colour yarn (cuff, heel and toe) - any DK yarn. I have used Valley Yarn Superwash DK (125m/50g) in colour black. The total amount of yarn will vary depending on foot size. For a medium sock knitted for a UK size 6 foot I used 40g total for the normal length sock, and 28g total for the trainer sock.

Gauge:

  • Knitted in the repeated pattern: 24 stitches by 32 rows
  • Knitted in stockinette stitch: 22 stitches by 34 rows

Sizes (actual sock circumference):

  • Small - 17.cm
  • Medium - 20cm
  • Large - 22.5cm
