The Alewife shawl is a very long isosceles triangle. It begins with just a few stitches and can be knit as wide as you like, for as long as you like, with as much or as little ribbing on the end as you like. The richly textured pattern used in the shawl resembles fish scales. The sample was knit with Kim Dyes Yarn Brioche DK in the Williamsburg colorway and is named after the alewife, a type of herring native to the tide water area of Virginia. This pattern works well with solid, semi-solid, gradient, and lightly speckled yarn. The textured pattern will be lost in heavily variegated and very dark colored yarns, so I do not recommend them for this project.
