The Anna Top
The Anna Top is a top down drop shoulder construction. The top is inspired by a shirt from photoshoot I saw that I could only find two photos of but decided I needed.
The back is worked flat with shoulder shaping, then continued until the armhole depth is complete. Then each shoulder is picked up, shoulder and neckline shaping is worked and then the fronts are joined. Once the front reaches the correct length, the top is joined in the round under the arms to work the body. The collar is worked in the round after stitches are picked up.
A more accessible version of the pattern PDF is available. This version features no italicized text, size 22 pt all-black font, no pictures in the body of the pattern, and all text in a single column. A schematic is included in the pattern but it is not needed to complete the garment. Both versions of the pattern include a sans serif font (Fira Sans).
The top includes directions for both a crewneck (navy sample) and vneck (green sample) option, as well as several finishing options; small i-cord (see the navy sample’s hem), folded twisted rib (see the navy sample’s collar), or a standard rib (see the green sample’s collar and hem).
The Anna is knitted using Light Fingering (the green sample yarn is 487 m 533 yd per 100 grams, or approx. 26 WPI and the navy sample yarn is 435 m 476 yd, or approx. 22 WPI), or yarn held together to achieve a similar weight. The pattern is knitted with a gauge of 30.5 stitches x 37 rows in stockinette = 10x10 cm 4x4 inches. It’s a very small gauge but without sleeves the top actually comes together very quickly.
The Anna is designed to have 15-20 cm 6-8” of positive ease, but the sizes are listed in final bust circumferences so you can choose as much, or as little, ease as you’d like. The finished bust circumferences are 83 ½ (89, 99, 109), 116, 118 ½, 129 (140 ½, 150, 160), 170 cm 33 (35, 39, 43), 46, 47, 51 (55 ½, 59, 63), 67 inches. Ten stitches are decreased towards the bottom of the arm holes, so the bust circumference is slightly larger than the body circumference (difference is ~3.5 cm 1.4”) to reduce excess fabric under the arms.
Yardages are 690 (745, 830, 905), 960, 1010, 1095 (1208, 1286, 1410), 1436 m 751 (810, 907, 990), 1049, 1105, 1195 (1321, 1406, 1542), 1570 yds. These estimates are based on the navy sample, with slightly cropped length with a folded collar and icord bind off on the body, if you expect to add length to the body or use a hem that uses more yarn, please factor this into your amounts.
