The Anne Sweater (Adult)
Child Sized Pattern Available Here
Designed to be worn for at least three seasons, the Adult sized Anne Sweater is the perfect layering piece to extend the wear of summer dresses into the early spring and late fall. It’s great with circle skirts and under pinafores for a vintage-inspired look.
Knitting this sweater: This pattern is intermediate level, but could also be appropriate for confident beginners who wish to level up their skills. It offers plenty of opportunity for mindless knitting, while also keeping things interesting so you won’t get bored! The sweater is worked from the top down, then the front and back are knit flat before joining in the round and knitting to the desired length. The set in sleeves are constructed from the top down using German Short Rows and simple increases to make the puffs. For added structure, the rolled neckline is picked up and knit at the end. Instructions are also included for optional shoulder pads (added 10/20/2023) to broaden yarn options without having to worry about drooping puffs.
The pattern includes links to videos of each step of the process, as well as photos of the sweater in progress, so you will know just what to do--no guesswork involved.
This size inclusive pattern features a full range of sizes to fit a 30” to 60” bust. The sweater is designed to fit with 1’ negative ease and can be knit cropped or full length. An attached alteration worksheet provides directions and plug-and-go formulas for upper bust, full bust, waist, and sleeve (bicep width and Marilla’s Perfectly Sensible Puff) alterations.
Finished bust measurements by size: 29 1/3 (31, 33, 34 ½, 37 1/3, 39, 41, 43 ½, 47, 50 ½, 55, 58 ½) inches or 75cm (79, 84 88, 95, 99, 104, 111, 119, 128, 140, 149) centimeters.
Yarn: (cropped/full length): 580/700 (620/750, 660/830, 690/870, 745/940, 780/990, 815/1035, 870/1110, 940/1200, 1010/1300, 1100/1425, 1175/1520) yards of Worsted/Aran weight yarn ranging from 180 yards (165m) to 210 yards (192m) in 3.5oz (100g). Most yarns thinner than 210yds in 3.5oz, or yarns with excessive drape are not recommended for this project.
** Yardage reflects needs for pattern as written, these amounts will change if alteration worksheet is used. **
Choosing a yarn: The sweater can be knit in wool, cotton, or acrylic. When picking a yarn, keep the puffs in mind. Knitted fabric should be dense, not open for best puff performance. Most yarns between 180yds and 210yds per 100g (3.5oz) are appropriate. For the best puff performance, avoid yarns with excessive drape. You may also wish to go down a needle size to knit the puffs, as their structure is more important than acheiving the correct gauge.

Other materials:
Suggested Needles:
Size 7 (4.5 mm) circular knitting needles, or size needed for correct gauge.
Size 5 (3.75 mm) circular knitting needles. The smaller size needles should be at least two sizes smaller than the largest needles needed for correct gauge, or the size needed to achieve correct ribbed rows per inch.
Circular needle length should correspond to the chest measurement of your garment.
To knit the neck/sleeves: DPNs, 10” (25.4cm), 12” (30.5cm), or 20” (50.8cm) circular needles, or the Magic Loop method using the same needle sizes listed above.
