We often teach young children lessons through stories. Aesop’s Fables, Grimm’s Fairytales, and even Bible stories have a bite-size moral and we remember for years. Stories paint a picture of what happens when we do the right thing or when we stray from the path of righteousness. The Values Collection is an exploration of visual storytelling where I introduce you to the characters who helped shape me into the person that I am today. Vulnerability, nuance, empathy, and audacity are key parts of who I want to be on a day to day basis, and the shawls and wraps use texture and color to translate the narrative from the page and screen into yarn.

Alanna of Tortall was told, at the age of 11, that she had to learn to be a proper lady instead of the knight she wanted to be. She and her twin brother decided to switch places so he could learn to be a mage and she could take his place in the capital at the knight academy. Across the four books in the Song of the Lioness quartet by Tamora Pierce, you watch Alanna break the gender binary and societal rules over and over. She does suffer consequences and she has to reconcile that what she wants is going to alienate her, but in the end, she knows that it is better for her livelihood to have the audacity to become something the world hasn’t seen before. She learns along the way what it means to be a woman and a man and what it means to have friends and chosen family that truly accept her for who she is as a person. Alanna is a shining example of the idea that you don’t have to exist on the binary as it is presented to you and that just because you are different than what society expects, it doesn’t mean that you have to change your armor.

The Audacity shawl is a 3/4, all-over lace shawl that is reminiscent of the scale armor that Alanna would have worn as a knight of Tortall. The two center spines have bobbles spaced evenly that represent the rivets that would have kept the armor together. It is a short piece, intended to use as much of one skein of yarn as possible and to sit across the shoulders and around the neck like a pauldron, so you can join Alanna in battle, whether you are slaying dragons or conquering a business meeting.
