Earlier this year a tea cosy competition was run in my hometown of Melbourne. I asked for design suggestions from my friends. I’ve been playing the bagpipes since I was twelve and play in the pipes and drums band associated with my school. The Pipe Major of the band suggested that I make a tea cosy in the design of bagpipes. Thus, the bagpiper was born. Unfortunately, the bagpiper did not win the competition, but I’ve written up the design to share with all others who want to have a Scottish influence in their kitchen. It incorporates both knitting and crochet techniques, but the crochet is generally very easy. It also includes some very intense fair-isle work, so only try this if you are confident with working fair-isle.

Yarn:
25 grams Black 8ply
50 grams MC 8ply (this can be any colour as it forms the base colour of the tartan. I find that Cleckheaton Country Tartan works the best, as it creates a very nice tartan effect)
25 grams White 8ply
25 grams Brown 8ply
25 grams (or less) of Yellow 8ply (or any colour, tassels can generally be any colour, I just happen to like gold most)

Needles:
4mm circular needles
4mm DPNs
4mm straight needles
4mm crochet hook

Other Stuff:
1 little red pompom (can be bought at most craft stores)
