The Basic Beanie - it’s worked from the top down without swatching, there are five sizes from toddler to large adult and it’s designed from DK to Aran weight and heavier yarns.

Knitted from the top down without swatching, it’s perfect for leftover and scrappy yarns! Regardless of your gauge, it’s started at the top in the same way, with increases on every round. After a few rounds have been worked, the gauge per 2.5 cm & 1 inch is measured to determine the total amount of increases to be made.

Gauge-wise, the pattern range is from 5.5 sts to 3.75 sts per 2.5 cm / inch (which roughly equals 22 – 15 sts per 10 cm / 4 inches). The pattern is suitable from DK weight to Aran weight and heavier yarns.

The beanie features a folded brim, with three layers of fabric for extra warmth. The work is turned at the forehead with a German Short Row for a neat Stockinette Stitch brim.

Gauge
The pattern is worked without swatching, by starting from the top of the crown. After a few rounds of increases have been worked the stitch count per 2.5 cm / 1 inch is measured to determine the gauge and the number of increases to be made. Gauge range of the pattern is 5.5 sts - 3.75 sts per 2.5 cm / 1 inch (which roughly equals 22 – 15 sts per 10 cm / 4 inches).

The pattern is written from DK to Aran weight and heavier yarns. For a warm beanie, choose a needle size that is 1-2 sizes smaller than you would normally choose.

Sizes
There are five sizes: toddler (child) teen / small adult (medium adult) large adult to fit the head circumference of 43 (48) 53.5 (57) 60 cm / 17 ¼ (19 ¼) 21 ½ (22 ¾) 24 inches. The beanie is designed with 20 % of negative ease, leading to finished beanie circumferences of approximately 34.5 (38.5) 43 (45.5) 48 cm / 13 ¾ (15 ½) 17 ¼ (18 ¼) 19 ¼ inches.

Using scrappy silk mohair yarns:
Estimated amounts, in grams for lace weight silk mohair held quadruple (4 strands together) and worked with 3.5 mm / US 4 needle, across sizes are 60 (70) 85 (100) 115 g.

Needles
Choose a needle size that is 1-2 sizes smaller than you would normally choose. That is 3.5 mm / US 4 for DK weight yarn, 4 mm / US 6 for Worsted weight yarn and 4.5 mm / US 7 for Aran weight yarn.

For the top of the crown you’ll need 3 DPN’s if you prefer not to magic loop.

For the ‘body’ of the beanie you’ll need knitting needle(s) of your preferred kind for small circumference knitting.

Notions
