The Birthday Wrap
This pattern starts with a provisional cast on, so is worked from the centre out. Consisting of mainly garter stitch with leaves growing along its main body, in opposite directions from the centre and with a knitted on leafy edging at each end. The result is a large and elegant oblong garter stitch and lace wrap with frilled lacey ends.
The knitted on edge means that there is very little in the way of casting off. Both chart and written instructions.
Inspiration for this knit came following the success of The Birthday Shawl and the encouragement and support of my lovely mum. She just isn’t the type to wear a triangular shawl, so I thought I’d design a wrap for her using the same lace-edging.
Gauge (not particularly important)
22 stitches over 40 rows per 10 cm square (in unblocked garter stitch)
Approximate Dimensions
The finished blocked shawl will measure:
65 cm (25.5”) Wide
170 cm (67”) Long

Easily adaptable
If your guage is different, or you have more or less yarn that the pattern requirements (640 - 650m) or you want to use a different weight of yarn, then you can adjust the pattern very easily. Split the yarn you have into 2 equally weighted skeins. Start with one skein and knit as many 16 row centre lace panal repeats (or half repeat ending with row 8) as you can until you have 15 grams of yarn left (100 metres or 110 yards if using a different weight of yarn) and then start the kintted on edging. The other skein will then make the other side (assuming you’ve weighed it properly and have maintained an even tension).
