The Blue Diamonds Shawl is a romantic wrap, that can be shaped either as a full diamond to be used as a sumptuous throw - unusual, and gorgeously cosy with worn or as a traditional triangular shawl. Although it looks a complicated knit, it is quite easy, the edging is knitted at the same time as the body of the shawl; and, as with other lace knitting projects, each even row hasn’t any pattern stitches but is plain knitted, except for shaping.
This is a relatively quick project, taking between 20-30 hours on average to knit, for the triangle, double that for the full diamond. the simple edging is a traditional hap one used in Shetland (a “hap shawl” was a warm and serviceable, simple lace-patterned shawl; knitted and used by the Shetland women in the 1800s). The centre pattern, known here as the ‘body’ is composed of lace diamonds. Additionally, as an introduction to charted knitting, the pattern is given both as a chart and in partly written form with helpful advice for its making and care.1
