The Cailleach
The Cailleach (kol-yak) is a Celtic Goddess, known as the Crone of Winter… She is in an eternal fight against the young spirit of Spring, which is represented in the circular purl bands around the hat. The Cailleach tries to keep Bride, the spirit of Spring captive, inside a mountain, but each year, Bride is released and Spring can begin.
Knitting yourself a Cailleach will keep the fog and cold winds of winter away… It can be laced up with either an icord (instructions included) or a ribbon. Wear the cinched part on the side, or in the back. Whatever your chilly day needs!
It is perfect for a beginner, or an advanced knitter alike. It will knit up quickly, and you can substitute any DK or even a worsted yarn if you are getting the correct gauge. Please note that if you use a worsted yarn, you might end up with a denser fabric and less drape. Use whichever needles give you gauge.
