Traditionally, a Chilote Hat was woven from handspun wool in a very rough form. It was mainly worn off the coast of Chile in the Chiloe’ Archipelago. The colors were usually very neutral and the caps were adorned with an acorn (pom pom) at the top.

This Chilote Hat was created to flatten the top of the hat rather than the usual rounded variety. SSK stitches are used to decrease, rather than the K2tog usually seen. This makes a nice design on the flattened top. The hat has four purl ‘ridges’ that create depth, interest, and a place for the flattened top of the hat to turn smoothly.

The Chilote is a simple hat, knit of chunky yarn, or worsted yarn held double, where you only need to be able to cast on, knit, purl, slip/slip/knit, and sew in ends. A large pom pom is always a plus and tops off this hat perfectly.

Currently, the Chilote Hat is in one size for a school-age child/small adult. I have made this a free pattern and hope you will share images here on Ravelry or social media with #joyfulstash
