The Clever Cloche is a cloche hat pattern. It is close fitting hat, with a wide, fold up brim with a faux button flap and buttons. The design is clever because it is not knit as one size fits all. It is fitted by the knitter based on the diameter of the crown of the wearer. Thereafter the pattern will self adjust to a range of yarns without the knitter having to calculate the change in the number of stiches and rows.

This pattern will work best for yarns with needle recommendations in the range 4mm to 7mm ( or US sizes 6 to 10 ½.) Finer yarns may produce too floppy a fabric and larger yarns will be difficult to knit in rows which fit the ratios or fold easily, but you can experiment.

This hat is knitted in one piece and other than adding the buttons no sewing is required.

This version is suitable for the complete novice and has a variation for those who want to have real button holes.
