The Cobblestone Handbag - a crochet pattern by Charissa Pray!

This is a fully tested crochet pattern to make a handbag. It comes with instructions to make 2 different sizes, plus alternative shaping and ideas for making your bag taller. There are also instructions for adding straps, which could be either crocheted or purse straps purchased from a store or taken from an old purse. I’ve even added instructions for lining your purse, with two different methods for attaching the lining. For the visual thinkers, there are crochet charts included for the bottom of the purse to help show where your increases should fall, and also pictures of the bag in progress! And you’ll be able to see 8 examples of the bag for inspiration. All in all the pattern is 15 pages long and chock-full of useful information.

Information on the pattern:

• Difficulty level - Intermediate. The bag is made up of alternating popcorn stitches and double crochets, and requires some shaping. If you line your bag, you will need some basic hand or machine sewing skills. I have provided links to videos showing the more complicated stitches used in the pattern.

• Materials required - 2-3 skeins of bulky yarn (my samples used Loops & Threads Charisma), a 3/4” button, J hook, and a tapestry needle to weave in ends. Optional: Purse strap, fabric for lining your purse, thread and a sharp needle for sewing the lining, embroidery thread to do a blanket stitch along the edge of your fabric.

• Pattern is in US terms.

• Gauge is not very important for this pattern, but in order for the bag to be nice and stiff (which will help it stand up and make it so the fabric won’t let your keys drop through if you don’t line it), you’ll want to use a hook that is a couple sizes smaller than recommended on the yarn label. Some examples are shown in the gallery using different yarn. My gauge for the samples was 4 repeats of the popcorn, double crochet pattern and 4 rows in a 4” square.

• The small size is 7 inches tall (not including the handle/strap), 13 inches wide when flattened.

• The big bag size is around 9” tall, 16 inches wide when flattened.

• Your size may vary depending on yarn used and your tension, and can be adjusted by adding or removing rows of popcorn stitch. You can see this by looking at the bags in the gallery section — all of them are slightly different sizes!

I hope you enjoy this pattern!
