The Companion
This scrappy accessory was inspired by the look of a square scarf rolled or folded and tied around the neck. This design mimics that look without folding the knitted fabric.
In practice, this companion piece doubles as a headband. I love accessories and clothing that have multiple purposes. The ribbing in this project makes it stretch both laterally and vertically making it even more versatile!
I hope this project helps you use some of your scraps or one-of-a-kind skeins, make something to match a larger project, and explore the possibilities of this little accessory.
Materials:
- US Size 8 / 5 mm Almost any needle type will do! Circular needles, straight needles, or even double-pointed needles!
- Tapestry Needle (for weaving in ends)
Yarn:
- About 40-60 yds / 36.5 - 55 m of DK weight yarn
What I Used:
- Rockies DK from Explorer Knits + Fibers in the colorway Karma Chameleon
- 44 yds / 40 m of this 100% Superwash Merino Wool yarn
Dimensions:
- 1.5” / 3.75 cm x 29” / 73.5 cm (or custom length)
The sizing of this is customizable and described in the pattern.
Gauge:
- 15 st by 8 rows per 1.5”x1.5” / 3.75 cm x 3.75 cm square
This is an unconventional gauge size, why these measurements? Gauge often is different in a small number of stitches. Because this is a narrow project with only a few stitches, I used the width of the final object to measure gauge. Because this is scrappy, small, quick and does not require blocking, I would recommend skipping a gauge swatch and going for it! (gasp!) You can measure the gauge when you have about 1.5” / cm of the body or about 8 rows
