This is a warm blanket that can be draped over an adult’s lap or used in a baby’s crib.

As given, the instructions produce a blanket that is practically square, but it is easy enough to change the size. Cast on more--or fewer--stitches in multiples of 12 to change the blanket’s width; knit more--or fewer--brick layers to change its length.

The colourwork is achieved with slipped stitches so you only work with one colour per row, making this a good project for beginning knitters who want to move beyond garter stitch and stocking stitch. The bricks change size occasionally and the brick layers are different heights, so you do have to keep an eye on your progress. But mistakes will not be very noticeable--build your brick layers in random heights, if you prefer, and all will be well.

The original blanket was knit with Bernat’s Waverly yarn, which has been discontinued, but any Aran weight yarn can be substituted. Consider using a multi-coloured yarn for the bricks, with a contrasting solid colour for the mortar.
