I can still hear my mom grumbling about how long it took to reprogram my Dad’s fashion sense after they met. You see, my dad grew up on a dusty farm in the heart of Saskatchewan. He and his four brothers spent their youthful days shooting gophers, running the tractor and all the other things that boys on a grain farm in the 1950’s and 60’s did. They wore brown and they were proud of it. Fast forward to the 80’s when having your colours done was all the rage. After completing her colour consultation, mom- in her glorious spiral-permed wisdom, proclaimed that dad was a winter and needed to wear blue- not brown. She claimed it took a long time to get him out of his farmer-browns and into the new cool blue. These socks were inspired by a color combination dyed by Allison Barnes Yarn for her Fiber Fix November 2023. I couldn’t resist roughing the socks up a bit with a stitch pattern that, despite the sophisticating effect of the blue yarn, still looks kind of scruffy around the edges. After all, you can take the boy off the farm, but that farm will remain in his heart for a lifetime.
