“There is good rock here. This country has tough bones”
—Gimli, “Helm’s Deep”

Skill Level: Beginner-to-Intermediate: The pattern involves some cabling, but isn’t complicated in any other way.
Materials: Approximately 420(840) yds or 380(740) m of sock yarn. The cowl pictured is a size small and used a full skein (every last centimeter!) of Descent of Woodpeckers from Alisha Goes Around. Color was not listed on the band.
Needles: US4 (3.5mm) circular needle with a wire of 24 inches or 60cm (longer is fine for a large size).
Tools: Tape measure, scissors, stitch marker (for beginning of the round), cable needle (if necessary)
Sizing: 36 (72) inches or 91.5 (183) cm “long” (measured around the circle of the cowl), and 8 inches 20cm tall.
Gauge: 27 stitches and 40 rounds per 4 inches or 10 cm square, worked in the Edge pattern

Special note: Many thanks to my lovely model, Szilvi Nagy

Errata
A cable stitch is missing from the key. The missing four stitch cable should be worked by slipping 2 to a cable needle, held to the front. K2, then K2 from the cable needle.

The top edging should be worked in a different order than listed in the pattern-- begin with a slip stitch round and finish with a knit round. Nicky noted this in the photo to the side.
