Squealing wheels on a black tarmac road. Coloured dots of red Alfa Romeos, yellow Porsches and blue Jaguars. The Driver: Squealing Wheels is a textured, cabled scarf designed to keep you warm on a winter country drive.

The inspiration for this pattern is my enthusiasm for classic car rallying. It is designed for my father - the driver of our rally team. There are two team-mate scarves: The Navigator: Country Roads and The Mechanic.

This design uses a set of cable crosses to create a picture of two sets of tyres weaving down the road. The cables are straightforward and the scarf is an interesting knit as the cable crosses vary as you travel down the road.

The Driver is designed to be about 170cm long and 20cm wide. It is easy to add more repeats of the cable pattern if you would like a longer scarf.

The scarf is best worked in a smooth woollen yarn for warmth and stitch definition. A yarn with yardage of about 200 m (220 yds) per 100 grams is recommended. A solid or very slightly varied colour will best show the cables and texture.

The pattern includes full charted and written instructions.

This pattern has been test knitted by katisha, julstolps and turquoisgirl. Thanks to you all!
