THE DUKE asked the WEE DUCHESS to knit him some socks that would be colourful, really cosy and not too thick around the leg; but, could they be made with thicker heels, soles and toes so they won’t make holes after a few wearings? and, could they not be too tight across the ankles? OF COURSE! Said the Wee Duchess, this can be done, and here you are. Socks made with a single strand of self-striping sock yarn for the instep, in an easy twist pattern, but the heel, sole and toe are worked in stocking stitch using 2 strands held together of a contrasting yarn. The Wee Duchess has invented a simple method of using wraps and turns to achieve this. The ‘Strong’ heel construction knitted with 2 strands of yarn ensure a nice big roomy heel box with a very comfortable fit for a man, or also for a woman with a high instep. The different tensions are compensated by inserting optional additional rows for the instep. The Duke said, ‘Thank you my dear, these are the very best socks ever’. The pattern is written in full AND has added tutorials with illustrations to help you with the technical bits. The Wee Duchess excels once again in designing a sock with more durable soles using her unique method.
