The Dumb Baby Sweater
Size: To fit a large newborn or a small six-month-old
Materials Needed:
- One 3.5-ounce (100g) skein or two 50-gram balls of fine-quality smooth classic worsted wool or acrylic yarn.
- Size 8 (5mm) circular knitting needle, 24 or 29 inches (61 or 73.7 cm) long
- 3 smaller-size circular needles to use as stitch holders (16 inches 40.6 cm long if possible)
- 8 rubber needle point protectors
- Small safety pins
- Very thin plastic ring markers
- A small amount of smooth, heavy cotton crochet thread or 1/8-inch-wide (0.5 cm) soft ribbon
- A large tapestry or small metal yarn needle
- 4 small purchased buttons 7/16 inch (1.5 cm) in diameter
- Scissors
Gauge: The assumed gauge for this baby sweater is 5 stitches per 1 inch (20 sts = 4 inches/10 cm) on size 8 (5 cm) needles in stockinette stitch.
Gauge: 5 sts = 1 inch in st st
Tension: 20 st = 4 inches or 10 cm
I do not usually make my students work a gauge swatch for this project. The best lesson about gauge they will ever learn will be to compare the differences in the sizes of the various students’ sweaters all following the same instructions with the same yarn, needles, and number of stitches.
Low Vision: This book is available from the National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled in a digital audio format.
