I called this pattern The Dutchie because the white and the blue together reminded me of Dutch wall tiles. I’ve seen many kitchens with these tiles and I think they bring such joy and warmth to the home. Which is what I hope this little hat can bring you and whoever you make it for.

Because there is colourwork throughout the entire hat, it’s essentially double thick, making it perfect for the cold winter months. It’s also long enough to cover the ears to protect them against chill winds.

Don’t be intimidated by the colourwork if you haven’t done much before. Most of the patterns are actually pretty simple and don’t require you to catch the strands in the back. My tip would be to stay aware of your tension. Make sure you’re pulling the new colour loosely so that the hat can still stretch when worn.

This hat stretches quite a bit so be mindful when choosing a size. My head is 20-21” and the small fits perfectly snug.

Also if you’re worried about casting on you can forgo the ribbed edging and just cast on normally. I only did it this way because I think it leaves a neater edge, especially with corrugated ribbing.
