This is a diagonally worked Irish Moss stitch pattern. You may use whatever worsted weight cotton yarn you prefer….the pattern work with needles sizes 4 - 8 US sizes…I prefer size 6 as it isn’t too tight, but not super loose either. It really depends on your personal preference. I recommend blocking the final product if you want it to form a true square.
