The Essential Sweater
A top-down, seamless version of the same design is available here. Knitted flat and and bottom-up in double rib and stockinette stitich. Looks great together with The Essential Beanie (free pattern available separately). A practical, unisex design that has been ideal play-wear for my children.
Note that there is a size 5-6 years available in the top-down pattern for this design.

Requires: 3¾mm (US 5) and 4mm (US 6) straight knitting needles; 3¾mm (US 5) circular knitting needles are optional, as the sweater can be made with straight knitting needles only; stitch holders.
Short rows are used for shaping. Instructions for how to knit short rows are not included in the pattern, but widely available online.
