This crochet hat was designed with Florence in mind, as the city is filled with marble sculptures and statues on every corner. The rich surfaces, shapes, and movement these sculptures display were the inspiration to create a hat piece that not only will protect you from the strong summer sun but will be unique and handmade due to its rich texture, cables, and contrasting 3D compositions.

Pattern notes:
- Language: English

  • Terminology: US

  • Level of difficulty: Confident beginner/ Intermediate.

  • This pattern includes a mix of stitches and elements that have a more complex construction than a basic bucket hat. Therefore, I recommend it for confident beginner crocheters and up, who are familiar with crochet terminology, and techniques, and are used to making a variety of stitches.

  • If you are a beginner but willing to learn, the pattern is very clear and will be a good chance to learn more advanced stitches.

  • Skills: Magic ring, slip stitch, DC, SC. (Basic crochet stitches), DC increase, FPdc front post double crochet, BPdc back post double crochet, crossed dc, Dc2tog, crocheting in the round.

Materials:
-Yarn: DK/light worsted (size 3) weight yarn.

  • Alternative yarn: Worsted/Aran (size 4) weight yarn could also be used but with a 4mm hook (or 3.5mm hook if you crochet loosely), using this yarn will make your hat a bit heavier, but more stiff and structured.

-Yarn material: Any cotton yarn will work. Cotton blends such as cotton/viscose, cotton/polyester, Tencel, or bamboo will be very fresh materials for high temperatures. Also, Acrylic blends could give a lot of structure to the hat such as acrylic/cotton, and acrylic/nylon. Bear in mind that using 100% wool could be too warm for summer. If you are using a bamboo blend or a very stretchy yarn, a smaller hook size is recommended. If you want to emphasize even more the textures and cables, use a mercerized or shiny yarn.

  • Recommended hook: 4mm crochet hook (or 3.5mm hook if you crochet loosely) - Measuring tool (e.g., ruler, tape measurer)

  • Scissors & tapestry needle

  • 2 Stitch markers
