Fishing is a very important industry and prominent part of the culture in Fair Isle, Scotland, with much of the fish being salted and dried or turned into fish oil. This has been the livelihood of many on the island for centuries.
So when I created this pattern, I decided to call it the ‘Fisherman’s Net’ in honor of our Scottish Heritage (on my mom’s side) and to be honest, I couldn’t help but notice how this fair isle pattern I chose looked like a ‘net’.
You can also read a bit more about the family history that inspired this pattern, here in the blog post that my Mom janiswasell wrote recently.
Fair Isle knitting can also be described as stranded colorwork and this pattern is easy. Some knowledge of colorwork would be necessary, but this pattern should be easy enough for a beginner to try their hand at Fair Isle knitting.
This hat fits most adults and there are some additional sizing details in the pattern. You’ll need under 400 yards of yarn for this hat, 2 colors of a worsted weight wool yarn and 1 color of a fingering weight yarn. This is a perfect hat to keep you warm and cozy!
