Classic, warm, simple and squishy, the Fisherwoman’s Hat is a great basic to take you through the colder months.

Constructed from the bottom up with a folded cuff and unusual (but simple!) decreases this hat knits up quickly and will add a polished yet cosy touch to any outfit.

Sizes
Small will fit heads with a circumference of up to 57cm (22 1/2 inches). It will fit heads that are as small as 45cm (17 3/4 inches).

Medium will fit heads with a circumference of up to 63cm (24 3/4 inches).

As fisherman’s rib is so stretchy, these sizes will cover most heads – great for all the fisherwomen, fishergirls, fisherboys and fishermen in your life. If you do need a smaller or larger size, it pretty easy to adapt: just increase or decrease your stitches by a multiple of 8. The extra stitches go either side of your centre decreases.

Gauge
19 sts per 10cm (4 inches) and 42 rows per 10cm (4 inches).

It might seem like there are a lot more rows than usual. That’s because with fisherman’s rib you’re knitting/purling into the row below, so each row you do is equivalent to about 1/2 a row in regular rib/stockinette.

Suggested needles
3.5mm (US 4), 3.75mm (US 5) and 4mm (US 6) DPNs or circulars using the magic loop method.

** Suggested yarn**
170m (185 yards) – 95m (215 yards) of Knit Picks Wool of the Andes worsted weight in colour Brass Heather, or any other worsted weight/10 ply yarn in a soft, warm and squishy animal fibre.

Special techniques
• Tubular cast-on
• K1b and p1b (fisherman’s rib)
• SSKb and k2togb – these are some pretty unusual decreases. They decrease your fisherman’s rib without the need to decrease 2 stitches like in most brioche-style decreases. I couldn’t find any online tutorials so I’ve included step-by-step photographic instructions with the pattern.
• Three-needle bind off

This is my first pattern, so if you have any feedback or questions I’d love to hear them! Send me a PM or email me on me@sarahmcmillan.net.
