The Gallivanter
Presenting The Gallivanter purse, shown in two different styles: the handled purse, and the clutch! This pattern originates from a 1917 pattern from the Royal Society company, titled “Bag No. 1238.” The clutch is even worked up in the original color palette! While the 1917 version calls for handles, I wanted to add a second, non-handled version in case purse handles aren’t as easy to come by in your area.
The purse is worked in garter stitch stripes, so it stays entertaining as you switch from stripe to stripe, but is simple enough that it makes for good tv or zoom meeting knitting. It is also a fantastic scrappy project, as all stripes need less than 100 yards of fingering weight yarn!
The bag is lined with fabric to help with stability and to keep its shape over time. Not a seamstress? Don’t worry! The pattern includes a step-by-step instruction for hand stitching the lining. No prior sewing experience or sewing machine is necessary, so it’s a great project to dabble in some multi-crafting!
