The Gather Shawl
When I sat down to design this shawl the only
thing I knew for sure was that I wanted to knit
something using Noro’s new Taiyo yarn. It was
soft to the touch and begged to be knit, but as
what? I had just finished working out the
complexities of a really intense design and was
ready for a break, I wanted to work on
something simple and fun!
As fate would have it I was idly flipping through the
TV channels when I stumbled on a really old
movie called “Blood in the Sand” the scene
was one of those grand old ones where the
hero is crushing the heroine to his chest and no
one has kissed anyone just yet. But what
caught my attention was what the heroine was
wearing, a beautiful old shawl knit in the
pattern we mostly refer to now as “Old Spanish
Lace”. It was stunning and easily recognizable
and had probably been knit just for this movie
and suddenly I knew what I was going to do
with my Taiyo yarn!
I raced for my Barbara Walkers’ and in the end
decided that this shawl would be a mix of Old
Spanish Lace and simple “stockinette”, the
oldest of all shawl patterns.
This pattern is not unique in any way. You will
find variations on it just about anywhere you
look. If you look long enough and hard enough
no doubt you will find someone else who came
up with this exact combination of yo’s and
stockinette. I hope they had as much fun as I
did deciding which rows would go where, and I
hope you have as much fun as I did knitting
this!
