I use a K hook, but if you like a tighter knit you can use any hook to obtain the desired tightness. This afghan takes a little time, I can start it and finish it in a week or two, but it is relaxing to work the pattern. I find these patterns are some of the fastest. I came up with working these afghans over 20 years ago, and so simple my husband has done some he liked with ease. All the stitches are worked with the design, no back work of adding cross stitch with my patterns. They finish very beautifully and quickly. It is your option to work the yarns in as you go or to tie off at the end and adding a backing to the finished afghan.
