The Geoscientist's Hat
Set discount: this pattern can be purchased together with the matching Geoscientist’s Mittens at a set price of 7.50 CHF (coupon code GEO, previous purchases apply).
The Geoscientist’s Hat & Mittens are named after Danish seismologist Inge Lehmann, who in 1936 discovered the existence of planet Earth’s solid inner core. She wasn’t a geoscientist to begin with; but her background in mathematics allowed her to use the data from seismic waves to arrive at the correct conclusions about the inner structure of our planet. It took until 1971 before her results were shown to be correct by computer calculations!
The combination of brioche ribbing with double knit stripes makes for a reversible fabric – choose your favourite look and wear the hat inside out when you like! The ribbed brim can be folded up on either side and ensures a snug fit.
Skills required
Two-colour brioche knitting in the round, double knitting basics (much easier than it sounds, because you only ever use one colour per round!), grafting stitches with Kitchener stitch.
The pattern includes a photo tutorial explaining the brioche 4-stitch decrease and how to arrange the crown stitches for the Kitchener graft.
