The Good Farmer 2.0
This is an updated version of my first ever shawl pattern, back in 2020. I’ve kept the original write up, as it is very close to my heart:
This design is in honour of my dad, who passed away this year. He was a good farmer; a good man who was dearly loved. He planted the seeds, prayed for rain, and harvested beautifully straight rows. Patient, kind, humble, and generous, he went out of his way to help others. A simple shawl can never fully express what this wonderful man meant to me, but know that every stitch was a memory, a prayer, and a healing balm for my soul.
Triangular shawl is worked from the top down and includes simple texture patterns. Knit up in Aran or chunky weight yarn, it is a quick, comforting project.
Pattern Details
Version: 1(2).
Gauge: In stockinette stitch, 15(12.5) sts x 22(21) rows equals 4”/10cm after blocking.
Measurements: Width: 71(85)”/180(216)cm, length: 24(25)”/61(63.5)cm.
Yarn: Aran(Chunky) weight yarn.
Suggested yarn:
Version 1: The Farmer’s Daughter Pishkun (100% Non-superwash Wool, 255yds/100g) in color Sunny’s and The Farmer’s Daughter Oh Dang! (74% Suri Alpaca, 26% silk, 328yds/50g). 534yds/209g Pishkun, 477yds/73g Oh Dang!. Yarn is held together throughout project. 2 skeins each.
Version 2: Brooklyn Tweed Quarry (100% Non-superwash woolen spun Chunky weight Wool, 200yds/100g) in color Sandstone. 644yds/322g. 4 skeins.
This colorway is no longer available. Current colorway Woodsmoke is very similar.
Suggested Needles: US 10(11) 32-40” circular needle. Cord may be longer since shawl will be worked flat and cable will be used to hold large number of stitches.
Notions: 4 stitch markers, tapestry needle, row counter(optional). Blocking mats and pins are suggested, but not required.
Construction: Triangular shawl is knit from the top down, beginning with a knit/purl texture section, followed by an eyelet section, and ending with ribbing.
There are 2 versions of this shawl.
Version 1 is knit up in an Aran weight yarn, has a garter tab cast-on, is encased in a garter rib edging, and has a simple stretchy bind off.
Version 2 is knit up in a woolen spun Chunky weight yarn and has an I-Cord cast on, I-cord edging and I-Cord bind off. You could easily make either one with Aran or Chunky weight yarn, just be aware that this will affect measurements.
