A little history about grain sack stripes:

The design features stripes found on antique grain sacks. In the past, grain sacks were very useful in transporting a family’s grain to the mill and they were often personalized to be easily identified. Families would have their own stripe design and colors commonly seen in grain sack stripes were blue or red.

About the pattern:

To pay tribute to this classic design, we wanted to bring forth a knitted version of the stripes that so many of us hold so dear. This pot holder features the grain sack stripes centered in the project, allowing for a symmetrical look in the piece. In contrast to our napkin rings and coaster, this pattern utilizes the yarn being held double - having two strands being used together throughout the project, along with the needle used, allows for more of a dense fabric. Pots and pans can be quite warm - so we wanted to ensure that your countertops are kept safe when using this at home.

To allow more of a stable center, the pot holder is knit in three sections, starting with a center rectangle portion, then working two triangular ends to form an overall hexagonal shape. Having the extra seams throughout the center of the pot holder supports the notion of being able to quickly grab your pot holder and toss it on the counter, having it land flat rather than fold over onto itself. We also opted for the hexagonal shape to pair well with the pots and pans in your kitchen, as most will have round bases. This pot holder when finished measures 8.5 inches/21.59 cm wide and 10 inches/25.4 cm long from top to bottom.
