The Green Man Illusion
or buy at Payhip or LoveCrafts.
The Green Man illusion knit is approximately 60 cm (24 inches) square, when knitted using DK yarn and 3mm needles, and has been designed to be viewed from the side. It was originally intended to be a wall hanging but could, just as well, form the centre for a bedspread or throw or even the centre back of a shawl.
Illusion knitting is very easy. Only one colour is used on each row. When you look straight at the knitting you see only stripes. The image is revealed when you look from an angle.
I used Stylecraft Special DK in Dark Brown and Meadow (one ball of each). Any thickness of yarn can be used though your finished piece may be a different size.
The pattern includes several versions of the chart including one for mobile devices where you can see 20 ridges at a timenand always be able to see the numbers across the bottom of the chart. Never lose your place again!
The origins of the Green Man are obscure. Green Men symbols are found in many different cultures around the world, in religious and secular locations. They are sometimes known as foliate heads because they almost always incorporate foliage. A few heads depict women and animals.
The mysterious nature of the Green Man makes it an ideal subject for illusion knitting.
