The Gypsy Shawl
The Pattern- Basically Graceful
Defining the Pattern: Economical, Elementary, Speedy, Lacy, Reversible- in one word: Fabulous
The shawl requires a single stitch to start and wastes none- no finishing to speak of and only the beginning and the end strands to weave in- simplicity at its best. The most basic stitch pattern- the trusted garter- is utilized throughout this design. Even the lacy top edge is based on the same. Easiest increase technique (yarn over) works double duty to shape the triangular shawl as well as finishing the side edges. Of course, the garter stitch also does what it does best here- it prevents the edges from curling. Knitted on larger needle size, the stitch patterns produce a light weight, transparent and completely reversible garment which is easy and very quick to knit.
Materials/Notions
• Maiden Hair by Hand Maiden Yarn in Ebony, 67% Silk/23% Kid Mohair/10% Nylon, 300 meters/328 yards/skein per 100 grams/ 3.5 ounces, Sport weight, 1 skein
• Tapestry needle to weave in the tails
• US 8/5 mm circular needle set, 32” or longer
Finished Measurements/Gauge
• Approximately 46” x 46” x 62” Nothing is perfect! Based on knitter’s hand/yarn tension, finished measurements will most definitely vary. Remember that the objective here is to knit until you run out of yarn. Consequently, gauge is not important.
