When your brother says he wants a halibut hat for his birthday, you get to work designing one. And who doesn’t need a Halibut Hat right about now? Just for the…

The Halibut Hat is knit in the round from the brim to the tail. The front of the hat has short rows to create the illusion of a mouth. The tail is knit in two sides and sewn together. A top fin and side fins are knit in the round starting with Judy’s Magic Cast-on and then sewn to the body of the fish (er, hat).

These instructions are concise and are meant for experienced knitters. Techniques involved include: stranded color work, knitting in the round, casting on mid-row, Judy’s magic cast-on, wrap-and-turn (W&T) short rows, and k2tog and ssk decreases. I used white felt and buttons to add eyes.

I used Malabrigo Worsted to create the prototype. The final hat is about 22 1/2”. You can adjust the size by casting on more or fewer stitches depending on your gauge.
