The Hamsa blanket
The Hamsa is a universal sign of protection, power and strength that dates back to ancient Mesopotamia. Known as the Hand of Fatima in Islam and the Hand of Miriam in Judaism, it’s believed to protect against the evil eye and all negative energies. The word “Hamsa” means “five”, representing the fingers of the right hand.
For Hindus and Buddhists, it symbolizes chakras, energy flow in the body, the five senses and the mudras that affect them.
When the Hamsa hand is facing up, it is a universal sign against evil. It is a powerful sign of protection, and shields us from our inner thoughts of hatred, jealousy and insecurities.
May your Hamsa Hand bring you love, light, luck and protection!
The blanket is made using the overlay mosaic crochet technique with elements of tapestry crochet, as you will be carrying yarn in all even rows. It might look difficult, but consists of only sc and dc, so no intricate technique involved.
The pattern includes my tutorial on how to do overlay mosaic with tapestry elements, and also a tutorial on how to hide all your ends with a clever double border. Both tutorials are with written instructions and lots of pictures to help you learn this technique.
In the pattern I also give a thorough explanation on how to read the chart, and the first 15 rows of the pattern is written out, to help you get started. Reading a mosaic chart is really simple, so don’t be scared of it.
Pattern comes as a full chart suitable for viewing on a tablet or computer, and as charts for printing, if you prefer that.
Suggested yarn:
8 x Scheepjes whirlette 100g/455m, color 851/Liquorice.
4 x Scheepjes whirlette 100g/455m, color 860/ice.
2 x Scheepjes whirl 215g/1000m, color 792/Rainbow popsicle.
For my version I have used Scheepjes whirl and whirlette, but you can use any yarn you desire. If you use a thicker yarn or thinner yarn, the finished size will vary, but the proportions will stay the same.
