The Hebrides Cowl
The inspiration for this piece comes from the ferry ride I took from mainland Scotland to Islay, in the Inner Hebrides. The wave stitch pattern in the Hebrides Cowl is directly inspired by that ferry ride, as the waves caused the boat to rock back and forth for the entirety of the 2 hour journey. While the ferry trip wasn’t not an easy experience for me, making this design kept my mind off of the crazy September waves.
The Hebrides cowl is worked flat in the wave stitch until the accessory is 8 inches tall or desired height, then bound off and seamed up the side. There is also an option to make a longer version, creating more of an infinity scarf option.
The yarn used to make the original cowl is Iona Wool - 100% Single Origin Iona Yarn Aran Weight- Color IW5. Any worsted or aran weight yarn can work, as long as you match the stitch gauge. I used 50g of the Iona 100% Single Origin Aran yarn and 15g of Rico Design silk mohair to create the Hebrides cowl. For the infinity scarf, I used 85 grams of Juniper Moon Farm Cumulus Rainbow, which is a worsted weight yarn. The great thing about this project is it is a one-skein project. Have fun using leftovers or using that one special skein you’ve had in stash for who knows how long.
