The Hoopoe Blanket
The Hoopoe (named after the sound of its call) is a striking bird that has made a big impact on a variety of cultures, with references found in ancient images and writing across the world. Images of hoopoes have been found in ancient Egyptian tombs, and a hoopoe played a role in the ancient Greek comedy The Birds by Artistophanes, in which it is described as “king of the birds.” Also they are just one of the coolest looking birds ever, so why not have a hoopoe hanging out in your home?
Your finished throw will measure about 42” x 50” not including any decorative border you may want to add.
Pattern difficulty: intermediate. Due to many color changes and the use of a grid, this pattern may be tricky for beginners. If you are familiar with working with grids and working with several color changes, this pattern would be relatively simple to complete.
You will need:
Approx. 1,500 yards of DK weight (4) yarn in your main color and approx 200 yards each of the same yarn in 5 secondary colors: black, white, brown, gray, and a peach/orange color.
Note: I used Lion Brand Heartland and Caron Simply Soft yarns for my throw. Red Heart Soft also works well for this pattern. You may substitute with worsted weight yarn if you like, but your throw will be a bit heavier and you may want to use a smaller hook to ensure your throw reaches the correct finished size--although since it is a throw blanket and thus doesn’t need to be a precise size, if you don’t mind yours turning out a bit larger you can ignore the gauge and use an H hook anyway. More room for snuggling up!
Size H/5mm crochet hook
Scissors
Yarn needle
Measuring tape

Repeat Row 2 until you have a total of 15 rows.
Your finished gauge swatch should measure about 4” x 4” square. If your swatch is larger than mine, you may want to use a smaller hook. If your swatch is smaller than mine, you may want to use a larger hook.
