It began with pi, that little mathematical beauty that Archimedes of Syracuse, Greece calculated fairly accurately a couple thousand years or so ago. At first I was going to name my shawl after him, but I began having a hard time naming such a pretty shawl after a bearded old man. I thought, too, that it might be fun to name the shawl after the font I used for the headings in this pattern, Diogenes, but when it came down to it he was another old man with a beard, so I had the same problem. Besides the beards, one thing both of these men had in common was that they were Greek. I started looking at travel sites and maps of Greece after that, and found a lovely spot that I’d dearly like to visit: The Island of Corfu. Corfu is a traveler’s dream with lots of things to see and explore, many of which are from the times of Archimedes and Diogenes.

Using Archimedes’ pi, each tier of this half-circle shawl has nearly twice the number of stitches as its predecessor, and as the shawl grows and the tiers have more stitches and more rows, the motif also grows in size. Pattern is written for two sizes with plenty of options for further customization.
