The Janie Socks (Advent Minis)
The Janie Socks crochet pattern is my go-to design for creating multicolor stripes (made by mini skeins) blended with a main color for toes, heels, and ribbing (made by a 50- or 100-gram hank). This is such a fun pattern for using mini skeins collected from advent calendars or hand-dyed yarn collection releases! Of course, you could also endlessly adapt and modify this pattern by changing the striped pattern, using different yarn colors, adjusting the sock’s height, etc.
This pattern is written “recipe-style,” meaning that you will create your own sock recipe by recording the number of stitches, rounds, and rows you crochet for each section of the sock. While this may seem daunting, fear not – my instructions will carefully guide you through each step so you can customize this pattern to your individual foot size. In the pattern, I provide three starting sizes (Adult Small, Medium, and Large) to begin the Toe Box, and you will then be tailoring the socks’ dimensions to your feet.
While not particularly challenging, this pattern is marked “Intermediate” because of the variety of techniques in both stitch and color patterns. I recommend you crochet my Stitchery & Co. Classic Socks or Millie Socks before diving into this pattern!
In this PDF pattern, you will find:
- A detailed 65-page tutorial with 143 step-by-step color photos that teach you exactly how to crochet this sock set (including photos showing you where to place your hook and stitches!)
- Instructions provided for crocheting all sections of the sock, including tips for washing, blocking, and sewing in all ends
- A comprehensive supply list
- Tips that are written as if I am teaching a good friend, so you will encounter minimal abbreviations or crochet jargon
- Instructions written in US terms
- NOTE: The photo tutorial is included after the written pattern; I recommend either printing out the entire pattern and placing the pages side by side so you can view the photos and text at the same time, or printing only the written pattern and referencing the photos on your device as needed.
Although the instructions are very detailed, I recommend you be familiar with the following stitches that are used in this sock set:
- Foundation chain single crochet stitches
- Single crochet stitches
- Slip stitches
- Extended single crochet stitches
- Half double crochet stitches
Sizing Information:
- While this pattern is fully customizable, I provide three suggested starting sizes to begin your sock: Adult Small (foot circumference 8 inches and under), Medium (8-9 inches), and Large (9-10 inches)
- These sizes are based on your foot circumference, not foot length or shoe size.
Yarn Information:
- This pattern is designed with fingering or sock weight yarn, and requires approximately 120 grams to complete a sock set.
- Sample socks shown in this listing are crocheted in the colorway Mrs. Darcy by Little Wing Fibers (85% Superwash Merino, 15% Biodegradable Nylon) and the Jane Austen Penguin Clothbound Classics 7-set mini skein collection by McMullin Fiber Co. (80% Superwash Merino, 20% Nylon)
I want you to succeed in making this sock set and LOVE it! Complete pattern support is available if you have any questions along the way; simply email me at hello@stitcheryandco.com. This pattern was thoughtfully tested by a dedicated team of crocheters prior to publishing.
