1 x knitting pattern for Scarf Number 3:The JEE

The JEE is an incredibly important pattern to me. Not only is it stylish and a great knit, but it was originally designed for my mum (The JEE) who sadly passed away in August 2023.

I’d designed and knitted a version of this pattern for her back in the first lockdown of 2020 as a way of coping with the fact that I couldn’t be with her at a time when she was undergoing and recovering from her cancer treatment. And I’m pleased to say that she loved and wore her scarf until the very end.

This was also the first pattern I ever designed and the start of GoneAwool and Suzanne Ellsmore Designs. And I couldn’t have done any of it without my mum. Because it was she and my gran who taught me to knit. It was she who I could speak to when I wasn’t sure about something and she knew exactly how much work goes into producing a knitting pattern.

This published version of the pattern has been refined since that first scarf I gifted to Mum, but the beautiful textures remain. Each of the four complementary stitch patterns work wonderfully together and just flow from one to the other. You have the softer and bouncy Double Basket Weave and Rib and Welt patterns, and the almost 3D and more angular Moss Diamond & Lozenge and Parallelogram stitches, all surrounded by a simple, but robust moss stitch border. And to show off all this lovely stitch work, I would recommend using a plump DK yarn with great stitch definition to really help the patterns pop.

The scarf itself is a good weight, large and versatile to wear. As it uses DK yarn, it keeps you snugly and warm without being overly heavy. You can keep it casual with jeans by simply wrapping it round to show off more of the central section at the front or you can wear it as an elegant wrap with a brooch to keep you cosy when wearing a more formal outfit.

The beauty of this pattern also lies in the fact that it’s actually really easy to knit and is a great project for beginners and seasoned knitters alike. If you can knit and purl, you can knit this reversible scarf pattern. The individual stitch patterns are easy to pick up and quite intuitive. And whilst it’s not a quick knit, it’s definitely a gorgeously relaxing autumnal knit.

And going forward, in honour of Mum, I will be donating 50% of the pattern’s sales proceeds to Cancer Research UK between now and October 20th 2024. So whether you knit this fantastic scarf for yourself or for someone special, you will certainly have fun along the way whilst knowing that you are helping people have an even better chance of living with this disease and beating it in the future.

Happy Knitting!
