The Jef Toque

I created this pattern years ago when I couldn’t find a colour-work toque to make for my son and nephew. I found that the “hearts” created with the Fair-isle stitch seemed a bit girly, but plain stripes were a bit too boring. My knitting skills have come a bit further since then and I’ve fine tuned the pattern. I used Magic Loop for making this, but any technique you like to make hats should work. It fits best on children and young teens, although does still fit up to a small adult. I hope you enjoy it!

Materials:

  • 10.00 mm 40” circular needles, or preferred needles to make hats and obtain gauge.
  • Approximately 30 metres of main colour and 30 metres of contrast colour. I used Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick which is a size 6 Bulky.
  • Stitch marker to mark the beginning of round.
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends.

Gauge: 5 stitches x 7 rows in stockinette stitch = 2”x2”

Finished size (laid flat): 8.5 inches wide X 9 inches long
