The King's Forest Beanie
“King illegal forest to pig wild kill in it a is!” (Sheriff of Rottingham, Robin Hood: Men in Tights).
William the Conqueror was the first to enact the Forest Law in England. This law was intended to protect both the fauna and the vert (vegetation) of the forest. Residents living within the forest were not permitted to have hunting dogs, to bear hunting weapons, to fell trees, or clear areas for farming. Unfortunately, this did not prevent the extinction of wild boar and wolves in England. The terms and severity of punishment varied from ruler to ruler, but the protection of these forests was never taken lightly. Some of the forests originally protected by the Forest Law survive today, including Sherwood Forest.
