A little about Ladybugs:
As one of our debut designs for Cure Homemade, it seemed fitting to choose the well-loved Ladybug, as in my family I have been called “Katiebug” for years. These insects, belonging to the Coleoptera beetle order, go through a complete metamorphosis, eventually gaining their hardened wings as a cover to protect themselves.
The correct name for these insects is the Lady beetle, though they can be commonly known as Ladybugs, Ladybirds, or Ladybird beetles. They were given their name after helping a kingdom rid of plant-destroying pests during the Middle Ages in Europe. The farmers were grateful to the new beetles in the area, naming them “Our Lady’s Beetles,” and it still sticks today.
About the pattern:
This pot holder features a shape that models the Ladybug’s body itself - spots adorn both wings, and there is a head placed at the top. The piece is mostly circular with a small head placed at the top to give it a bit more shape. The coaster measures 8” x 8.25” / 20.32 cm x 20.9 cm, allowing enough of a surface for most pot and pan bases.
To bring a clean and finished edge to the piece, we have inserted an i-cord bind off around the perimeter. This design is tailored for a fun and finished look, allowing a clean edge to tie the project together and provide a nice ‘stop’ for the edge of a pot or pan.
In contrast to our napkin rings and coaster, this pattern utilizes the yarn being held double - having two strands being used together throughout the project, along with the needle used, allows for more of a dense fabric. Pots and pans can be quite warm - so we wanted to ensure that your countertops are kept safe when using this at home.
To allow more of a stable center, the pot holder is knit using stranded colorwork. Having additional colors “float” behind the project while working across allows for additional cushion and thickness. We also opted for the oval shape to pair well with the pots and pans in your kitchen, as most will have round bases. This pot holder when finished measures 8 inches/20.32 cm wide and 8.25 inches/20.95 cm long from top to bottom
