“In Rivendell there was memory of ancient things; In Lorien the ancient things still lived on in the waking world. Evil had been seen and heard there, sorrow had been known; the Elves feared and distrusted the world outside: wolves were howling on the wood’s borders: but on the land of Lorien no shadow lay.”
-J.R.R. Tolkien “Lothlorien”

Trees, flowers, leaves, and all growing things inspired these gloves. The rib on the palm of the hand creates a nice snug-but-stretchy fit, that’s soft without being floppy, and the lace panel on the back of the hand keeps things interesting. The wrist buttons up, and the fingers are all plain stockinette.

Skill Level: Intermediate: glove construction is not for beginners, and the lace panel adds some difficulty (although not much, for those accustomed to basic lace work).
Materials: Approximately 280-320 yds / 250-300 m of sock weight yarn. The gloves pictured are in Handmaiden’s Casbah MCN blend in the colorway “moss.” Also 10 small buttons, 5/16ths inch size (or .8 cm). The ones I used came from Buttonova’s etsy shop (available here, but fair warning— you’ll want the whole shop).
Tools: Stitch markers, stitch holders, tape measure, scissors, tapestry needle
Gauge: 8 stitches and 12 rounds/rows per inch or 2.5cm in stockinette.
Sizing: Small (medium, large) sizes measure approximately 8(8.75,9.5) inches in diameter when slightly stretched. The gloves pictured are a size large, on my hands, which measure 7.5 inches around the base of the fingers. Thanks to the ribbing, they are neither too loose nor too tight, but fit closely, without stretching the ribbing.
