Be it a cool breeze or to spice up a simple shirt, a small, separate collar can be useful for many things. Knitted in solid colors or in multiple colors, with garter or stocking stitch, “The Little Collar” offers a lot of variety both when knitting and when wearing.

The small collar is knitted in garter (or stocking) stitch using fingering weight yarn. Starting at one side, the small collar is shaped by short rows.

Skills required are:
-working knit and purl stitches,

  • knitting two stitches together,
  • yarn over, and
  • slipping stitches for short rows.

The upper edge is worked as an i-cord, which is also used to tie the collar. The instructions can easily be adapted to make the collar deeper, wider or narrower.

Sample Sizes: 41 cm neck diameter, 17.5 cm deep, 90 cm long including i-cord; washed and dried flat.

Yarn weight and usage:
4-ply yarn with 400m/100g

Sample shawl:
100% 4ply Merino Single, 400m/100g, usage in total 60 g / 240m.

Needles: Circular knitting needle plus two additional (DPN) needles in size to obtain gauge; US 4 / 3.5 mm recommended.

Gauge (10x10 cm): 24 stitches and 43 rows = 4” x 4” / 10 x 10 cm in Garter stitch; washed and dried flat
