The Long Day's Night
This mirror imaged sock pattern was born late one summer solstice evening (hence the name) when I had an urgent need to knit some new socks that would work well in both warmer and cooler temperatures. Living at a higher elevation can mean some cool summer mornings and evenings while the day remains quite warm. With these fluctuations in temperatures in mind, and those cool on the ankle air conditioning induced breezes, I looked to design a pair of socks that could be worn comfortably all day and this combination of a lace column combined with knit and purl ribbing fit the bill nicely.
A cuff down sock construction that knits up nicely as either an anklet or a mid-calf length sock. Easy enough for the adventurous beginner yet entertaining enough for the experienced sock knitter. The pattern is both written and charted. Directions are written for either the magic loop or 2 circulars methods, but they can easily be adapted to double pointed needles by the knitter. And if you’re feeling extra sassy and full of knitting gusto they even make a fun two at a time on two circulars project - just be sure to mark them with differing stitch markers.
