The Manning Park Hat
The pattern is available in English and German / die Anleitung ist in Deutsch und Englisch erhältlich.
About this pattern:
The Manning Park hat is a bit retro and a bit modern, just like its namesake, a provincial park and ski hill just east of Vancouver. Like an old school ski toque, the turned hem gives your ears a bit more protection from the cold, but the slight slouch updates the look. Designed to match the Manning Park Cowl, the Manning Park Socks, and the Manning Park Mittens. Wear them together, or wear them separately!
Dimensions:
Circumference of hat 19” (20”; 21”) to fit head circumference 22” (23”; 24”). Height = 9.5”.
Yarn:
Malabrigo Rios: worsted weight, 100% superwash merino wool; (100g); 210 yards (192 metres).
Yardage:
Approx 50 g of MC (plomo) and 50 g of CC (natural). Pom-pom requires additional yarn.
Skill Level:
This pattern is suitable for an advanced beginner or intermediate knitter who is familiar with stranded colourwork, provisional cast-on; turned picot hem; and basic increases and decreases.
Follow these links to video tutorials on: provisional cast-on;joining a provisional CO with live stitches for a turned picot hem; or, if you prefer, a bottom-up picot edge / knitted hem from a CO edge; and right lifted increase.
Pattern Notes:
This hat is knit from the bottom-up, in-the-round. Stranded colourwork pattern is charted. Size can be increased / decreased by adding / eliminated four stitches. More slouch can be added to crown by adding more rounds in CC. A snugger fit for the band can be achieved by using smaller needles (3.5 mm for the CC and 3.75 mm for the MC).
Errata
In the first version of this pattern, in the instructions for the turned picot hem, the instructions should read, “SM; (YO; K2TOG)* repeat to end of round.” Also, abbreviation RLI = right lifted increase, and where instructed to knit with magic loops, the knitter should simply knit the hat-in-the-round. The most recent version of the pattern has been updated to reflect these corrections.
