The Mathings Hat
A beret with simple eyelet stitch pattern, with both written and charted instructions included.
Size: To fit heads sized 19” (21”, 23”). Actual size 17” (19”, 21”)
Recommended Yarns: I used DROPS yarns (Nepal or Big Merino) for my samples but any approximately Aran weight yarn should work; please check your gauge before you begin to be sure that your hat will fit!
Yardage: My small sample used 110m, my medium used 135m and test knitters used around 150m for their large sizes, based on the above gauge in DROPS Big Merino. However please over- rather than under-estimate, as the stitch pattern eats up yarn rather quickly!
This hat was originally designed as part of Woolly Wormhead’s Hat Design class in October 2012. See other marvellous creations from similar classes here!
Woolly taught us the value of doing some simple calculations to ensure that we get a perfectly fitting hat every time, and as a result I actually swatched several times for this hat. (GASP!) As a result of this swatching I did end up with a pretty spectacular hat, and so this pattern was called ‘The Mathings’ in appreciation of the wisdom of swatching and doing some mathematical legwork!
I hope you enjoy the pattern. If you have any problems or questions please feel free to PM me!
